COLORATURA SOPRANO
Kelli Butler
“Ms. Butler is young and glamorous, lovely to look at and equally so to hear. During "Vilja", I was guilty of closing my eyes for some moments, better to enjoy the beauty of the top of her voice.“
— William S. Oser, Talkin’ Broadway
I’m Kelli Butler, an award-winning* coloratura soprano working & living in New York.
*FROM AN ACTUAL ARTS ORGANIZATION, NOT JUST MY MOM. (THEATRE TAMPA BAY, OUTSTANDING PERFORMER IN A MUSICAL, 2020)
Early Life and Training
Growing up in a military family, I spent my childhood in various locations, including Germany and the Eastern United States. My passion for opera ignited early on. I honed my skills at the Purchase College Conservatory of Music, where I performed leading roles such as the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Hanna in The Merry Widow, and the Dew Fairy in a celebrated adaptation of Hansel and Gretel. I also had the privilege of studying bel canto repertoire with renowned soprano Renata Scotto at her summer academy. In 2007, I traveled to Italy to perform operatic recitals in Lucca, Barga, and Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, showcasing works by Verdi, Puccini, and Donizetti. The following year, I participated in the Altamura/Caruso International Opera Festival, where I was a finalist and portrayed Valencienne in The Merry Widow under the baton of Maestro Anton Coppola.
New York City and Beyond
My New York City debut arrived in 2010 as the Third Lady in The Magic Flute with The Martina Arroyo Foundation Prelude to Performance. I further refined my artistry at Bel Canto at Caramoor, where I sang in the opening night performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream and participated as a soloist in their Young Artist concerts. I became a regular presence in New York's opera scene, collaborating with New Rochelle Opera and Underworld Opera. For New Rochelle Opera, I performed as Adele in Die Fledermaus and sang excerpts from operas like Rigoletto, La Bohème, Candide, and Der Rosenkavalier. With Underworld Opera, I debuted as Riccardo in Scarlatti's Il trionfo dell’onore and later portrayed Dinah in Trouble in Tahiti at Symphony Space.
In 2018, I made a critically acclaimed house debut with St. Petersburg Opera as the formidable Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, a role I had first performed as a young student at SUNY Purchase. That same year, I made my role debut as Musetta in La Bohème with New Rochelle Opera. I returned to both companies in 2019, performing Violetta in La Traviata with New Rochelle and reprising the title role in The Merry Widow in St. Petersburg. I also had the honor of creating the role of the District Attorney in the world premiere of Anthony Davis' Five, a powerful opera based on the 1989 Central Park Five case and the subsequent miscarriage of justice. My participation in this groundbreaking work was featured in a PBS documentary chronicling its creation and premiere.
I have also had the joy of many musical theatre performances, with one of my favorites being as the Lady of the Lake in Curtain Call Theatre’s Spamalot.
I continue my vocal studies with the acclaimed Canadian soprano Susan Eichhorn Young at her studio in New York City.
Much Love,
K
“Kelli Butler adds a critical leg to the casting as the queen, culminating in a jaw-dropping coloratura performance of one of the most difficult arias ever written, Der Holle Rache (The Revenge of Hell).”

“Kelli Butler as The Queen of the Night nails all of the insanely high, high notes (4 F’s above high C) and lets face it, this role is about those notes. Both of her arias are strongly sung...”
